What We Do

The Durango Mountain Camp (DMC) provides an intensive 5 ½ week language immersion program for diagnosed dyslexic students ages 11 – 16 (day campers 9 – 16).  DMC’s highly personalized academic program provides an hour daily of the following: One on one Orton-Gillingham based tutoring, individualized study hall, composition, and oral/silent reading.  This immersion program builds a strong language foundation which allows students greater success when they return home to their normal academic environment.  Many of these youngsters will progress through several levels in their language skills during the 5 ½ week summer session.

Durango Mountain Camp also provides an outstanding summer experience through an exciting selection of uncommon outdoor pursuits.  These challenging activities help develop creativity, enhance self-esteem, foster individual strengths, and generate a great deal of enthusiasm.  Greater self-confidence gained through successful participation in these outdoor pursuits often translates to a more positive attitude, which can last long after campers leave Durango Mountain Camp.

Day vs. Overnight Campers

What’s the difference?

  • We offer a full-day program for students ages 9–16. Campers are dropped off at camp Monday-Friday 8:50 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Day campers receive the same intensive, highly personalized academic program as overnight campers, including one-on-one Orton-Gillingham tutoring, individualized study hall, composition, and art. Lunch is provided daily, and campers also take part in co-curricular activities and outdoor adventures that build confidence, creativity, and enthusiasm.

  • Overnight campers, ages 11–16, enjoy the same intensive academic program as day campers, along with a full residential experience. They live in cabins on campus, separated by gender, with about 8 students and 2–3 camp counselors in each cabin. All meals and snacks are provided. Evenings feature group activities such as game nights, soccer, kickball, trivia, camp fires, story time, water activities, and more. On weekends, campers often head out on overnight camping and backpacking trips that build teamwork, confidence, and lasting friendships.

“We’ve only been home for a few days, and our socks have been knocked off! Connor has shared more about his awesome adventures at camp, and he has been reading with me. I am absolutely astounded at his progress! He’s not hesitant anymore, and he is able to correctly decode so many more words. This is such a blessing! Thank you so much for all of the hard work that I know must go into running DMC. The benefits of your program will have a ripple effect throughout Connor’s life.

Thanks again to you and all of the staff at DMC. We will most definitely be back next summer!”
